Tax Reminder for Musicians

Important: Crowdfunding income IS taxable income. Here is what you need to know:

  • Report all income. The IRS considers crowdfunding proceeds as taxable income. Your platform may send you a 1099-K if you receive over $600.
  • Deduct your expenses. The good news is that your campaign expenses (recording, manufacturing, shipping, marketing) are deductible business expenses. This is why tracking every expense matters.
  • Set aside 25-30% for taxes. As a general rule, set aside about 25-30% of your net campaign profit for federal and state taxes. Put this money in a separate savings account immediately.
  • Keep all receipts. Save every receipt, invoice, and confirmation email. Digital copies are fine. Organize them by category (recording, fulfillment, marketing, etc.).
  • Consider quarterly estimated payments. If your campaign brings in a large amount, you may need to make estimated tax payments to avoid penalties.
  • Talk to a professional. If your campaign raises more than a few thousand dollars, it is worth paying for a consultation with a tax professional who understands creative income. The money you save on taxes will more than cover their fee.
