About

Carla Venita Thomas emerged from Memphis as one of soul music's most compelling voices, earning her place in history as the Queen of Memphis Soul. Born in Memphis in 1942, she came from a musical family as the daughter of Rufus Thomas, and at just eighteen years old, she began recording duets with her father. Her breakthrough came with the release of "Gee Whiz" in 1960, a song that would launch her into the spotlight and establish her as a major force in soul music. Working primarily with Atlantic and Stax Records throughout the 1960s, Thomas developed a distinctive style that perfectly captured the spirit and emotion of Memphis soul.

Thomas left an indelible mark on music history through a string of memorable recordings that showcased her vocal talents and emotional depth. Her hits "B-A-B-Y" (1966) and the duet "Tramp" (1967) with legendary soul artist Otis Redding became defining songs of the era, demonstrating her ability to command a track whether performing solo or alongside other great artists. These recordings, along with her broader body of work for Atlantic and Stax, cemented her legacy as a crucial figure in the development of soul music and the Memphis sound that would influence generations of musicians to come.
