Chaka Khan
About
Yvette Marie Stevens, known to the world as Chaka Khan, earned her title as the "Queen of Funk" through a career spanning more than five decades, beginning in the early 1970s. Her breakthrough came as the lead vocalist of the funk band Rufus, where she helped craft some of the era's most infectious hits including "Tell Me Something Good," "Sweet Thing," and "Do You Love What You Feel." The platinum-certified "Ain't Nobody" showcased the band's enduring appeal and established Khan as a powerhouse vocalist with remarkable range and soul. Her distinctive voice and commanding stage presence set the foundation for what would become one of music's most celebrated careers.
Khan's solo trajectory proved equally impressive, beginning with her debut solo album that featured the number-one R&B hit "I'm Every Woman," a song that would become emblematic of her artistry. She continued scoring R&B chart success with "What Cha' Gonna Do for Me" and made history in 1984 as the first R&B artist to achieve a crossover hit featuring a rapper, with her electrifying cover of Prince's "I Feel for You." Her collaborations demonstrated her versatility, most notably her 1986 partnership with Steve Winwood on "Higher Love," which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Through thirteen solo albums and countless unforgettable performances, Khan's legacy stands as a testament to the transformative power of funk and soul music.
