Charles Frank Mangione was an American flugelhorn player, trumpeter, and composer who brought warmth and accessibility to jazz during a career spanning decades. Born in Rochester, New York, in 1940, Mangione came to prominence as a member of Art Blakey's band in the 1960s, establishing himself as a gifted instrumentalist and bandleader. He later co-led the Jazz Brothers with his brother, Gap, building a reputation for innovative jazz arrangements. His breakthrough moment came in 1978 with the release of "Feels So Good," a jazz-pop single that achieved international success and introduced his distinctive flugelhorn sound to audiences worldwide. Mangione passed away on July 22, 2025, in his native Rochester.

Throughout his prolific career, Mangione released more than 30 albums beginning in the 1960s, each showcasing his gift for blending jazz sophistication with melodic appeal. His work transcended the recording studio; he also appeared in various television shows, including a memorable recurring role on the animated series King of the Hill, bringing his artistry to new audiences. Mangione's legacy rests on his ability to make jazz both intellectually rigorous and emotionally resonant, proving that accessibility and artistic integrity need not be at odds.
