Cibo Matto
About
Cibo Matto emerged from New York City in 1994 as a Japanese-American duo formed by Yuka Honda and Miho Hatori. Their distinctive approach to music and songwriting caught attention with their debut album, Viva! La Woman, released in 1996. The record was refreshingly unconventional, with lyrics that playfully centered on food and culinary themes, setting the band apart in the mid-1990s music landscape. This imaginative beginning established Cibo Matto as a bold and creative force, blending experimental sensibilities with pop accessibility.
The band's evolution became apparent with their second album, Stereo Type A, released in 1999. Here, Honda and Hatori expanded their artistic reach beyond their debut's singular focus, exploring broader subject matter and deepening their sonic palette. The album brought collaborators Sean Lennon, Timo Ellis, and Duma Love into their creative circle, enriching the band's sound and scope. Through these works, Cibo Matto established themselves as thoughtful artists unafraid to challenge conventions, leaving an indelible mark on experimental pop music and inspiring listeners with their willingness to blend whimsy with genuine artistry.
