About

Daniel Earl Hartman was an American pop rock musician whose career took flight as a member of the Edgar Winter Group, where he co-wrote and performed the classic hit "Free Ride". His talents as both a songwriter and vocalist positioned him as a distinctive voice in pop rock during the 1970s and 1980s. With a gift for crafting infectious melodies and memorable hooks, Hartman emerged as a solo artist who understood the formula for creating radio-friendly anthems that resonated across mainstream audiences.

Hartman's solo career produced a string of notable hits including "Relight My Fire", "Instant Replay", and "Second Nature", with his biggest success coming in 1984 when "I Can Dream About You" reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. Beyond his own recordings, Hartman's talents extended to production and songwriting for other artists, most notably co-writing and producing James Brown's 1986 hit "Living in America", which climbed to No. 4 on the charts. His contributions to pop rock and his ability to craft enduring songs secured his place as a versatile musician whose work continues to exemplify the craftsmanship of 1980s pop music.
