David Knopfler
About
David Knopfler, born December 27, 1952, is a British musician who co-founded one of rock's most influential bands. Together with his older brother Mark Knopfler, John Illsley, and Pick Withers, he established Dire Straits in 1977, serving as rhythm guitarist on their first two albums. His contributions shaped the band's signature sound during their critical early years, appearing on the self-titled debut *Dire Straits* (1978) and *Communiqué* (1979). The demands of composing, arranging, and supporting the band's rapid rise eventually took their toll, leading him to pursue a solo career as a recording artist.
David Knopfler departed from Dire Straits in 1980 during the recording of the band's third album, *Making Movies*, marking a significant turning point in his musical journey. His time as rhythm guitarist on the band's first two albums established his place in rock history, contributing to records that would become classics in the genre. Following his departure, Knopfler embarked on his own path as a solo recording artist, continuing to develop his craft as a guitarist, singer, and songwriter in the years that followed.
