Dr. Dre
About
Andre Romell Young, known professionally as Dr. Dre, was an American rapper, record producer, record executive, and actor who left an indelible mark on hip-hop music. He began his career as a member of the World Class Wreckin' Cru in 1984 before co-founding the groundbreaking gangsta rap group N.W.A in 1987 with Eazy-E, Ice Cube, and Arabian Prince. The group's 1989 debut album Straight Outta Compton became one of the most successful albums in West Coast hip-hop history, popularizing explicit lyrics that detailed the realities of street life and fueling the rise of gangsta rap as a dominant force in popular music. Dr. Dre passed away in January 2021. During the early 1990s, he emerged as a key figure in crafting and popularizing West Coast G-funk, a subgenre distinguished by synthesizer-heavy foundations and slow, powerful production that would define an era.
Dr. Dre's solo career flourished with the release of his landmark 1992 album The Chronic, which solidified his influence as a producer and artist. Beyond his recordings, he established himself as a visionary executive, founding Aftermath Entertainment and Beats Electronics while co-founding Death Row Records. His work as a record producer and sound engineer shaped the sonic landscape of hip-hop for decades, earning him recognition as one of the genre's most consequential figures. From his early days with N.W.A through his later work including the 2015 album Compton, Dr. Dre's legacy remains that of an innovative artist and producer whose vision transformed West Coast rap into a global phenomenon and influenced countless musicians across genres.
