About
Gary Numan was an English singer, songwriter, and musician who revolutionized new wave music in the late 1970s. Born Gary Anthony James Webb in 1958, he burst onto the music scene as frontman of Tubeway Army, whose 1979 album Replicas reached No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart and spawned the smash single "Are 'Friends' Electric?" Though his commercial peak came in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Numan's influence extended far beyond those golden years. He sold over 10 million records throughout his career and maintained a devoted cult following that never wavered, testament to the enduring power of his distinctive synth-driven sound and visionary approach to electronic music. His pioneering work established him as a cornerstone of new wave, influencing generations of musicians who followed in his groundbreaking footsteps.
