About

Hugh Ramapolo Masekela was born in 1939 in the township of Seshego in Witbank, South Africa, and became a transformative force in global jazz. As a virtuosic trumpeter, flugelhornist, cornetist, singer, and composer, Masekela earned recognition as "the father of South African jazz," establishing himself as a distinctive voice in a genre that demanded technical mastery and emotional depth. He passed away on January 23, 2018, at the age of 78.

Masekela's legacy rests on both his musical innovation and his powerful commitment to social justice. He crafted memorable anti-apartheid compositions including "Soweto Blues" and "Bring Him Back Home," using his artistry as a vehicle for political conscience. His 1968 recording "Grazing in the Grass" became a number-one US pop hit, demonstrating his ability to reach audiences far beyond jazz circles. Through his prolific output across multiple studio albums, Masekela proved that jazz could be simultaneously commercially successful and socially conscious, leaving an indelible mark on music history.
