Iain Matthews
About
Iain Matthews is an English musician whose career began at the forefront of British folk rock. As an original member of Fairport Convention from 1967 to 1969, Matthews helped shape the sound of a generation during a pivotal moment in music history. His distinctive voice and musical sensibility made an immediate impact, but his creative ambitions soon led him beyond the band. After leaving Fairport Convention, he formed Matthews Southern Comfort, a project that would bring him mainstream success and introduce his artistry to an even wider audience.
The formation of Matthews Southern Comfort proved to be a defining moment in his career when their cover of Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock" reached number one on the UK charts in 1970. Later, in 1979, his recording of Terence Boylan's "Shake It" demonstrated his continued relevance, climbing to number 13 on the US charts. Over a career spanning more than fifty years, Matthews has featured on over 100 albums, establishing himself as a prolific and respected figure in music. In 2018, he published an autobiography co-written with author and broadcaster Ian, offering insight into his remarkable journey through five decades of music.
