About

Iris DeMent was an American singer-songwriter born in Paragould, Arkansas, on January 5, 1961, as the youngest of fourteen children. She began singing publicly at age five as one of "the little DeMent sisters," though an early performance where she forgot her words caused her to step back from public performing for a time. DeMent's musical style wove together folk, country, and gospel traditions, creating a distinctive sound that drew from her deep roots in American music. She passed away in 2024. Her career gained momentum when she released her debut album, Infamous Angel, in 1992 on Flariella Records, a label she founded and named after her mother.

Over her career, DeMent released several acclaimed albums including My Life (1994), The Way I Should (1996), Lifeline (2004), and Sing the Delta (2012), earning two Grammy Award nominations for her work. Her voice carried the emotional depth of folk and country traditions while infusing them with spiritual resonance rooted in gospel. Through her thoughtful songwriting and powerful vocal delivery, DeMent left an indelible mark on American roots music, proving that authentic storytelling and musical integrity could sustain a meaningful artistic life. Her contributions to folk and country music continue to inspire musicians and listeners who value genuine artistry and emotional honesty.
