Jan Hammer was a Czech-American musician, composer, and record producer whose virtuosic keyboard work helped define the sound of progressive rock and jazz fusion. He rose to prominence during the early 1970s as a keyboardist with the legendary Mahavishnu Orchestra, where his innovative playing contributed to the ensemble's groundbreaking fusion sound. Hammer passed away on May 2, 1989. Beyond his work with the orchestra, he established himself as a prolific composer and producer, bringing his distinctive musical vision to film and television projects throughout his career.
Hammer's most iconic contributions came through his work on the 1980s television series Miami Vice, where he composed and produced the show's legendary theme songs, including "Miami Vice Theme" and "Crockett's Theme," which became synonymous with the era's aesthetic and sound. His compositional reach extended across at least 14 original motion picture soundtracks, 90 episodes of Miami Vice, and 20 episodes of other television series, demonstrating his versatility and consistent demand as a creative force. Through his fusion of jazz sensibilities with electronic innovation, Hammer left an indelible mark on both progressive music and television scoring, influencing generations of musicians and composers who followed.
