Jefferson Starship
About
Jefferson Starship rose from the legendary San Francisco psychedelic rock scene in 1974, evolving from Jefferson Airplane with founding members Paul Kantner and Grace Slick at the helm. The band quickly expanded its sound beyond psychedelic roots into melodic arena rock, achieving massive commercial success with their 1975 album "Red Octopus," which reached number one on the Billboard 200 and featured the Top 5 hit "Miracles." With a rotating roster of exceptional musicians including Marty Balin, Mickey Thomas, Craig Chaquico, and David Freiberg, Jefferson Starship spent a decade delivering platinum-selling albums and electrifying stadium performances, earning their place among the defining rock acts of the 1970s.
After a period of evolution and change in the mid-1980s, Paul Kantner revived the Jefferson Starship name in 1992, steering the band through new creative chapters while honoring their San Francisco legacy. The ensemble continued recording and touring into the 21st century, with vocalist Cathy Richardson and longtime member David Freiberg anchoring a lineup that remains faithful to the band's adventurous spirit. Their 2020 studio album "Mother of the Sun" and subsequent 2021 recordings demonstrate a creative vitality spanning five decades of music-making. Following Kantner's passing in January 2016, Jefferson Starship has carried forward as a living tribute to his vision, bringing their signature blend of rock power, melody, and social consciousness to generations of devoted fans.
