About

Jermaine Dupri Mauldin stands as one of hip-hop's most influential figures, born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, where his father's work as a Columbia Records executive provided early exposure to the music industry. Beginning his career at just nine years old, Dupri quickly demonstrated a remarkable gift for identifying talent and crafting hits. His breakthrough moment came in 1991 when he discovered the teen hip-hop duo Kris Kross and produced their smash single "Jump" in 1992, which soared to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and became the 23rd most successful song of the entire decade. This triumph established Dupri as a visionary producer and songwriter while he was still in his teens.

Dupri's impact on music extends far beyond a single hit. In 1993, he founded So So Def Recordings in partnership with Columbia Records, transforming it into a powerhouse label that would nurture some of hip-hop's most celebrated artists. His roster has included Xscape, Bow Wow, Da Brat, Jagged Edge, Dem Franchize Boyz, YoungBloodZ, and Anthony Hamilton, among many others. Through his work as a songwriter, record producer, rapper, and music executive, Dupri has shaped the sound of contemporary hip-hop and R&B, leaving an indelible mark on popular music that spans multiple generations and continues to influence artists today.
