About

James Bromley Spicer was born in Brooklyn in 1958 and became a pioneering force in old school hip hop during the late 1970s and early 1980s. His debut single, "Adventures of Super Rhyme," a 15-minute epic, was widely regarded as the first true storytelling rap, establishing Spicer as an innovative voice in the genre's formative years. Under the management of Russell Simmons' Rush Management, Spicer released a series of memorable singles that captured the creativity and energy of early hip hop culture. He passed away on September 27, 2019, at the age of 61, leaving behind a legacy that continues to resonate with those who appreciate the roots of rap music.

Spicer remained best known for his classic single "Dollar Bill Y'all," a track that defined much of his artistic reputation. His work extended beyond his own releases, as "The Bubble Bunch" featured what was Jellybean Benitez's first remix, helping to bridge rap and dance music production. The influence of Spicer's music proved enduring, with his work sampled by some of hip hop's most significant artists, including Wu-Tang Clan, 2Pac, De La Soul, and Busta Rhymes. Through these samples and the respect of subsequent generations, Spicer's pioneering contributions to hip hop storytelling and style secured his place as a foundational figure in the music's history.
