Joan Armatrading is an English singer-songwriter and guitarist born in Basseterre, Saint Christopher and Nevis, on December 9, 1950. She began writing songs at around age fourteen, setting her own limericks to music on a piano her mother had purchased. After her first concert performance at the University of Birmingham at sixteen, Armatrading would go on to achieve her first major commercial success with her third and fourth albums, "Joan Armatrading" (1976) and "Show Some Emotion" (1977). These landmark releases established her as a distinctive voice in contemporary music, showcasing her ability to craft compelling songs and deliver them with emotional authenticity.
Throughout her career, Armatrading has become one of the most respected and accomplished songwriters of her generation. A three-time Grammy Award nominee and twice nominated for BRIT Awards as Best Female Artist, she received an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contemporary Song Collection in 1996, recognizing her exceptional talent as a songwriter. With a discography spanning 21 studio albums, 4 live albums, and 2 EPs, Armatrading continues to play live and record, maintaining a prolific presence in music and cementing her legacy as a pioneering and enduring artist.
