John Roger Stephens, known professionally as John Legend, is an American singer, songwriter, pianist and record producer born in Springfield, Ohio. He began his musical career working behind the scenes for other artists, playing piano on Lauryn Hill's "Everything Is Everything" and performing as an uncredited backing vocalist on tracks by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys. Legend's breakthrough came when he became the first artist to sign with rapper Kanye West's GOOD Music label, through which he released his debut studio album, Get Lifted, in 2004. Preceded by the hit ballad "Ordinary People", the album reached the top ten of the Billboard 200 and received double platinum certification, establishing Legend as a formidable force in contemporary R&B.

Legend's artistic accomplishments have been recognized at the highest levels of the music industry. At the 48th Annual Grammy Awards, he won three Grammy Awards from eight nominations, including Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for "Ordinary People", Best R&B Album for Get Lifted, and Best New Artist. His subsequent studio albums have continued to showcase his talents as a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, with Love in the Future in 2013 preceded by the hit single "All of Me". Through releases including A Legendary Christmas in 2018 and Bigger Love in 2020, Legend has solidified his legacy as one of contemporary music's most versatile and accomplished artists.
