John Benson Sebastian is an American singer, songwriter and musician who founded the rock band the Lovin' Spoonful in 1964 with Zal Yanovsky. The band's arrival marked a breakthrough moment in rock music, with Sebastian's songwriting and vocals propelling them to widespread success. His gift for crafting infectious melodies and relatable lyrics helped define the sound of mid-1960s rock, blending accessible pop sensibilities with genuine musical craft that resonated with audiences seeking something both fun and substantive.
During his time with the Lovin' Spoonful, Sebastian wrote and sang some of the era's biggest hits, including "Do You Believe in Magic," "Summer in the City," "Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind," and "Daydream."
