Kurtis Blow
About
Kurtis Walker, known professionally as Kurtis Blow, stands as a pioneering force in hip-hop history. Emerging from Harlem, he became the first commercially successful rapper and the first to sign with a major record label, fundamentally changing the landscape of popular music. His 1980 self-titled debut album introduced "The Breaks," a single that became the first certified gold record rap song, establishing both his artistry and the commercial viability of rap music. During the years between "Rapper's Delight" and Run-D.M.C.'s rise, Kurtis Blow dominated hip-hop as a solo artist, helping invent the very concept of the rap solo career.
Throughout his prolific career, Kurtis Blow released 17 albums, including notable works such as "Deuce" (1981), "Tough" (1982), and "Kingdom Blow" (1986), each showcasing his evolution as a rapper, songwriter, and record producer. Beyond his musical contributions, he has served as an ordained minister and leader of the Hip Hop Alliance, demonstrating a commitment to his community that extends far beyond the studio. His legacy remains essential to understanding rap's transition from novelty to cultural force, having opened doors for countless artists who followed and established the template for hip-hop's mainstream success.
