About

Larry Graham Jr. stands as one of the most innovative bassists in music history, best known for his transformative work with the psychedelic soul and funk powerhouse Sly and the Family Stone. As both a skilled baritone singer and pioneering instrumentalist, Graham helped define the sound of a generation, bringing a distinctive energy to the band's genre-blending approach. His breakthrough came through his groundbreaking invention of the slapping technique on the electric bass guitar, a revolutionary method he himself refers to as "thumpin' and pluckin'." This technique radically expanded the tonal possibilities of the bass, fundamentally changing how the instrument could be played and heard across multiple genres.

Beyond his work with Sly and the Family Stone, Graham founded and fronted Graham Central Station, establishing himself as a leader in his own right. His solo career brought considerable commercial success, most notably with the 1980 single "One in a Million You," which climbed into the top ten on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. Throughout his career, Graham has maintained a remarkable ability to blend funk, soul, and pop sensibilities, creating music that resonates across generations. His innovation on the bass guitar and his contributions to multiple landmark projects have cemented his legacy as an essential figure in the evolution of modern music.
