About

Lee Michaels was an American rock musician born Michael Lee Olson on November 24, 1945, who became known for his distinctive approach to performance, accompanying his soulful vocals with organ, piano, or guitar. He passed away in 2024. Michaels built a career rooted in accessible rock sensibilities, crafting songs that resonated with authenticity and emotional directness. His breakthrough came with his 1971 album "5th," released on A&M Records, which introduced audiences to his singular artistry and proved that meaningful rock music could find mainstream success.

The album "5th" produced Michaels' signature achievement: "Do You Know What I Mean," which climbed to number six on the US charts in late 1971 and became a Top 10 hit. Written as an autobiographical homage to the loss of a girlfriend, the song showcased Michaels' ability to translate personal experience into universal emotional truth. Beyond his recording career, he demonstrated entrepreneurial vision by founding the Marina del Rey, California-based restaurant chain Killer Shrimp in 1988, which he and his family continued to operate. Michaels' legacy reflects an artist who remained dedicated to his craft while expanding his creative vision into new ventures.
