Born in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1967, Liz Phair grew up in the Chicago area and studied at Oberlin College, graduating in 1990. After an initial attempt to launch her music career in San Francisco, she returned home to Chicago, where she began self-releasing audio cassettes under the moniker Girly-Sound. These homemade tapes caught the attention of independent record label Matador Records, earning her a recording contract that would launch her into the music world. Phair emerged as a distinctive voice in rock music, blending the authenticity of a singer-songwriter with the edge and energy of rock, creating a sound entirely her own.

Throughout her career, Liz Phair has established herself as a prolific artist, releasing seven studio albums alongside numerous extended plays, singles, and compilations. Her body of work spans rock music with the sensibility of a thoughtful songwriter, demonstrating her evolution and range as both a musician and guitarist. Phair's impact on music extends beyond her recordings; she helped pave the way for independent artists to achieve success outside traditional industry structures, proving that self-released work could lead to meaningful recognition and opportunity.
