James Todd Smith, known professionally as LL Cool J, emerged from Queens, New York to become one of the earliest rappers to achieve genuine commercial success. In 1984, he was signed and released his debut single "I Need A Beat," a breakthrough moment that sold over 100,000 copies and firmly established him within the emerging rap industry. Alongside new-school hip-hop pioneers like Run-DMC, LL Cool J helped define the sound and style of rap's golden era, bringing a distinctive energy and charisma that captured audiences nationwide.

LL Cool J's second album, "Bigger and Deffer," released in 1987, exemplified his growing mastery of the craft, climbing to the No. 3 spot on the pop charts with the help of the hit single "I Need Love." Beyond his accomplishments as a recording artist, he demonstrated a versatility that extended to acting, taking on roles in films including the 2000 version of Charlie's Angels and starring in the 2002 remake of Rollerball.
