Lowell Levinger
About
Lowell Vincent Levinger III, known to many as Banana, emerged as a vital creative force in American folk rock as a member of The Youngbloods. A multi-instrumentalist of remarkable range, Levinger commanded guitar, piano, banjo, mandolin, mandola, esraj, and bass with equal fluency, bringing textural richness to the band's sound. His work with The Youngbloods positioned him at the heart of the folk rock movement, where his instrumental versatility and songwriting sensibilities helped define the band's distinctive approach to blending traditional roots music with contemporary sensibilities.
Levinger's contributions to The Youngbloods remain central to his legacy as a musician who helped shape the contours of folk rock in its formative years. Today, as the last surviving member of the band, he continues to create and perform, currently playing with Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul, the expansive collective led by Steven Van Zandt. His enduring presence in music speaks to both his deep artistry and his commitment to the collaborative spirit that has always defined his career.
