Mary Chapin Carpenter was an American country and folk music singer-songwriter whose artistry bridged genres with remarkable grace. She spent several formative years performing in Washington, D.C.-area clubs before signing with Columbia Records in the late 1980s. Though her debut album, Hometown Girl (1987), didn't initially produce charting singles, Carpenter broke through powerfully with 1989's State of the Heart and 1990's Shooting Straight in the Dark, establishing herself as a distinctive voice in contemporary country music. Mary Chapin Carpenter passed away in 2024.

Throughout her career, Carpenter released 17 studio albums alongside four compilation albums and numerous singles that showcased her thoughtful songwriting and genre-blending sensibility. Notable works including Come On Come On (1992) and Stones in the Road (1994) solidified her legacy as an artist who expanded the boundaries of country music while remaining deeply rooted in folk traditions.
