Beginning in the mid-1970s, he initially performed in hard rock and heavy metal genres, both as a solo artist and as frontman of the band Blackjack, establishing himself as a talented musician in those worlds. Beyond his performing work, Bolton proved himself a skilled songwriter early on, co-writing the hit "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You" for Laura Branigan before later recording his own acclaimed version of the song. This songwriting success set the stage for his evolution into new territory.

Bolton achieved his peak recognition in the late 1980s and early 1990s as a pop ballad singer, collaborating with celebrated songwriters including Diane Warren and Desmond Child to craft some of his most memorable work.
