About

Michael Martin Murphey is an American singer-songwriter born March 14, 1945, who emerged as one of the founding artists of progressive country music. Breaking through to the charts with "Geronimo's Cadillac" in 1972, Murphey crafted a distinctive sound that blended country sensibilities with innovative musical storytelling. His early success established him as a significant voice in reimagining country music for a new generation, drawing from both traditional country roots and contemporary artistic ambitions that defined the progressive country movement.

Throughout his career, Murphey has achieved remarkable commercial and critical success as a multiple Grammy nominee with six gold albums to his name. His landmark album Cowboy Songs became the first album of cowboy music to achieve gold status since Marty Robbins' classic Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs in 1959, marking a significant revival of Western music. With hit singles including "Wildfire," "Carolina in the Pines," "What's Forever For," and "A Long Line of Love," Murphey has become a prominent musical voice for the Western horseman, rancher, and cowboy. His contributions to American music extend beyond recordings; he authored New Mexico's state ballad, "The Land of Enchantment," cementing his legacy as a storyteller who has given voice to the American West.
