About
Nona Hendryx began her recording career in 1962 alongside Patti LaBelle, Sarah Dash, and Cindy Birdsong, launching what would become one of soul music's most distinctive groups. Born in Trenton, New Jersey in 1944, Hendryx's voice and artistry helped define the sound of Labelle, the trio that would achieve massive success with the hit "Lady Marmalade." Following her time with Labelle, Hendryx pursued a solo path that showcased her adventurous spirit and willingness to experiment. In 1977, she released her self-titled debut solo album, and in the early 1980s, she joined the experimental funk group Material, where she achieved the hit "Busting Out." Throughout her career, Hendryx has worked as a vocalist, record producer, songwriter, and musician, establishing herself as a multifaceted artist whose influence extends far beyond any single project. Her legacy reflects a commitment to artistic evolution and pushing the boundaries of soul, funk, and experimental music.
