Patti LaBelle

About

Patricia Louise Holte, known professionally as Patti LaBelle, earned her iconic title as the "Godmother of Soul" through a career spanning decades of musical innovation. Beginning in the early 1960s, she rose to prominence as the lead singer and frontwoman of the vocal group Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles. When the group's name changed to Labelle in the 1970s, they achieved a watershed moment with the US number-one hit "Lady Marmalade." LaBelle's commanding presence and distinctive artistry made her a defining voice in R&B, setting the stage for an extraordinary solo career that would follow.

Following Labelle's 1977 disbandment, LaBelle's solo career flourished with remarkable success in the 1980s, producing unforgettable hits including "If Only You Knew," "New Attitude," and "Stir It Up." In 1986, she reached the pinnacle of commercial achievement with both a US number-one album, Winner in You, and a US number-one single, "On My Own," a duet with Michael McDonald. Her artistry was further validated by Grammy recognition, earning Best Female R&B Vocal Performance in 1992 for Burnin' and another Grammy in 1999 for the live album Live! One Night Only. Her influence on R&B and soul music remains immeasurable, and in 2008 she reunited with her Labelle bandmates for the album Back to Now, cementing her legacy as one of music's most enduring and respected voices.
