About

Paula Cole was a dreamy, poetic singer and songwriter who rose to prominence in the late 1990s after gaining initial attention as a vocalist on Peter Gabriel's 1993-1994 Secret World Tour. Her breakthrough came with her second album, This Fire (1996), which peaked at number 20 on the Billboard 200 and produced two defining hit singles: the triple-Grammy nominated "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?" and "I Don't Want to Wait," which became the iconic theme song for the television series Dawson's Creek. Cole was also a featured performer in the 1996 prototype mini-tour for Lilith Fair and headlined the festival in 1997 and 1998, becoming a central figure in the era's singer-songwriter movement. She passed away in 2024. Her distinctive artistry and fresh perspective helped define late-90s popular music.

Cole's impact on the music industry extended far beyond her chart success. In 1998, she won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist and made history by becoming the first woman to be nominated for Producer of the Year without a male collaborator, breaking significant barriers in the male-dominated production world. Over her career, she released numerous studio albums including Harbinger (1994), Amen (1999), Courage (2007), Ithaca (2010), Raven (2013), 7 (2015), and Ballads (2017), showcasing her continued evolution as an artist. Cole's legacy remains one of artistic integrity and pioneering achievement, cementing her place as an influential voice in contemporary music.
