About

Pere Ubu was an American rock band formed in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1975, with singer and songwriter David Thomas as the sole constant throughout the group's evolving lineup. The band announced their arrival with the debut single "30 Seconds Over Tokyo" in December 1975, followed by their landmark debut album "The Modern Dance" in 1978, which established them as a distinctive force in avant-garde rock. After releasing several more records, Pere Ubu disbanded in 1982, only to reunite in 1987. David Thomas passed away on April 23, 2025, after decades of continued recording and touring that sustained the band's creative vision.

Over their half-century existence, Pere Ubu created a body of work that pushed the boundaries of rock music with experimental arrangements and provocative songwriting. Their albums and performances demonstrated an uncompromising artistic vision that influenced generations of musicians working in avant-garde and alternative rock. Through multiple incarnations and persistent creative output, the band left an indelible mark on popular music, proving that unconventional artistry could endure and evolve across decades while maintaining artistic integrity.
