Rufus Wainwright

About

Rufus McGarrigle Wainwright is a Canadian-American singer, songwriter, and composer born into a family steeped in musical tradition. The son of folk music luminaries Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, Wainwright grew up surrounded by creativity and artistic expression. His family legacy includes his sister Martha Wainwright and half-sister Lucy Wainwright Roche, both accomplished singer-songwriters in their own right. From these rich musical roots, Wainwright developed his distinctive voice and artistic sensibility, establishing himself as a serious composer and performer in his own right.

Throughout his career, Wainwright has recorded eleven studio albums alongside numerous tracks for compilations and film soundtracks, demonstrating remarkable versatility and prolific output. Beyond his work as a recording artist, he has expanded his artistic reach into classical composition, writing two classical operas and setting Shakespeare's sonnets to music for a theatre piece by Robert Wilson. This ambitious approach to music-making, which bridges popular songwriting and high art, has established Wainwright as a boundary-pushing artist whose contributions extend far beyond traditional singer-songwriter conventions, cementing his place as a significant voice in contemporary music.
