Shawn Colvin
About
Shawna Lee "Shawn" Colvin is an American singer and songwriter who built her foundation performing in folk and rock bands throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Her breakthrough came in 1988 when she toured with fellow artist Suzanne Vega, an opportunity that earned her a recording contract with Columbia Records. Her debut album Steady On (1989) announced her arrival with a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album, establishing her voice as a distinctive presence in contemporary folk music. With her gift for introspective songwriting and warm vocal delivery, Colvin quickly became recognized as a serious artist in the singer-songwriter tradition.
Colvin's legacy solidified with the 1996 release of A Few Small Repairs, which produced the crossover hit "Sunny Came Home"—a song that captured both critical and commercial acclaim, earning Grammy Awards for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. Her prominence throughout the 1990s was further cemented by her performances at all three original iterations of the Lilith Fair music festival. Over the following decades, she continued recording and touring, releasing albums with Nonesuch Records including These Four Walls (2006) and All Fall Down (2012), along with later studio work and a published memoir, Diamond in the Rough (2012). Her influence remains rooted in the authenticity and emotional depth she brought to folk and singer-songwriter music.
