Ricky Martin Lloyd Walters, known professionally as Slick Rick, is a British and American rapper and record producer who rose to prominence in the mid-1980s as part of Doug E. Fresh & the Get Fresh Crew. Based in New York City, Slick Rick became the third artist to sign with Def Jam Recordings in 1986, marking a pivotal moment in his career. His early collaborations produced "The Show" and "La Di Da Di," both considered early hip-hop classics. The latter has become one of the most sampled songs in history, a testament to its cultural significance and enduring influence on the genre.
Slick Rick debuted with his landmark album "The Great Adventures of Slick Rick" in 1988, which showcased his distinctive approach to rap characterized by intricate storytelling structure, humor, and complex rhymes. His signature song "Children's Story" exemplified this masterful blend of narrative and lyricism. Despite facing significant personal challenges, Slick Rick continued recording, releasing "The Ruler's Back" in 1991 and "Behind Bars" in 1994. Following his release from prison in 1997, he mounted a successful comeback with his fourth studio album, demonstrating resilience and a lasting commitment to his craft that solidified his legacy as an innovative force in hip-hop history.
