Steve Cropper was an American guitarist, songwriter, and record producer born on October 21, 1941, near Dora, Missouri. He passed away on December 3, 2025, in Nashville. As the guitarist of Booker T. & the M.G.'s, the legendary Stax Records house band, Cropper became instrumental in shaping the sound of soul music throughout the 1960s. His clean, economical guitar style and keen ear for arrangement helped define the records of icons including Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, and Carla Thomas. Beyond his work as a performer, Cropper served as producer for many of these groundbreaking artists, establishing himself as a crucial architect of the Stax sound that would influence generations of musicians.

Cropper's contributions to popular music earned him widespread recognition and respect. Rolling Stone magazine ranked him 36th on its list of the 100 greatest guitarists, a testament to his enduring impact on the instrument. He won two Grammy Awards from seven nominations throughout his career, honoring his exceptional work as both musician and producer. Later in his career, Cropper became a member of the Blues Brothers band, continuing to perform and influence musicians across multiple generations.
