Tevin Campbell
About
Tevin Campbell emerged as a prodigious talent in American R&B, beginning with gospel performances in his local church during his childhood. Following an impressive 1988 audition for jazz musician Bobbi Humphrey, the young singer was signed to Warner Bros. Records at just 12 years old. Campbell's breakthrough came swiftly in 1989 when he collaborated with legendary producer Quincy Jones, lending his voice to "Tomorrow" on Jones' album Back on the Block. That same year, Campbell released his Platinum-selling debut album, T.E.V.I.N., which showcased his smooth vocal style and earned him immediate recognition on the charts, particularly with the single "Tell Me What You Want Me to Do," which peaked at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Campbell solidified his status as an R&B virtuoso with his double-Platinum second album, I'm Ready, released in 1993 and featuring productions from the legendary Babyface. The album's standout tracks, "Can We Talk" and the title track "I'm Ready," both reached number 9 on the Hot 100, with "Can We Talk" also topping the Billboard R&B charts. Beyond music, Campbell expanded his artistry into film and television, voicing the character Powerline in Disney's 1995 animated film A Goofy Movie and making guest appearances on popular shows. With five Grammy Award nominations and over 5 million certified records sold in the United States, Campbell's elegant vocal presence and consistent contributions to R&B have cemented his place as an influential artist of his generation.
