Cost Estimation Tips for Musicians
Get real quotes. Do not guess. Call the pressing plant. Email the studio. Check shipping rates on USPS.com. Real numbers prevent real problems.
Always round up. If a quote says $1,487, put down $1,500. Small overages add up quickly.
Do not forget shipping. Shipping is the number one cost that musicians underestimate. Get actual rates for your package sizes and weights.
International backers cost more. If you expect international support, budget $15-30 per international shipment.
Factor in your time. Packing and shipping 200 orders takes days of work. Consider whether you need to hire help.
The contingency is not optional. Something will cost more than expected. The 15% buffer keeps your project from going into the red.
Pro Tip: Round your campaign goal up to the nearest clean number. If your total comes to $7,340, set your goal at $7,500. Clean numbers look more professional and give you a small additional buffer. Never round down.
