How Pricing Works for Crowdfunding Rewards

  • Physical rewards (vinyl, CDs, merch): Price at 2.5x your total cost (production + shipping). This covers platform fees, unexpected expenses, and gives you margin to fund the actual project.
  • Digital rewards (downloads, streaming access, digital credits): Price at 5x your cost, since production cost per unit is near zero once created.
  • Experience rewards (concerts, studio visits, lessons): Price based on your time value and exclusivity. These often have the highest margins.
  • The “Core Product” tier ($20 to $50) typically drives 60% of your total revenue. This is the tier most backers choose. Make it your best value.

Pricing Tips for Musicians

  • Do not underprice physical rewards. When you factor in production, shipping, platform fees (5-8%), and payment processing (3-5%), a $10 vinyl can actually lose you money.
  • Digital rewards are almost pure profit. A digital album download costs you essentially nothing to deliver. Price these at $10 to $15 for strong margins.
  • Limit high-tier rewards. Offering 5 house concerts at $500 each creates urgency and exclusivity. Unlimited availability reduces perceived value.
  • Bundle generously at middle tiers. Your $25 to $50 tier should feel like an incredible deal. This is where most of your money comes from.
  • Factor in platform fees. Kickstarter takes 5% plus payment processing (3-5%). IndieGoGo takes 5%. Add 10% to your cost calculations to account for this.
  • International shipping adds up fast. Consider offering digital-only tiers for international backers, or clearly state that international shipping costs extra.
