The loss of Taylor Hawkins hit fans hard. It hit the band even harder. Every headline, interview, and review carried that emotional weight hanging over it. The guitars are massive. The choruses soar. The drums hit like they’re trying to crack concrete. The album never asks for sympathy. It earns respect instead.
What’s strange is how quickly the cultural conversation moved on. The release was treated like an emotional moment, people posted tributes, critics praised it, and then the machine rolled forward to the next trending thing five minutes later.
Meanwhile, one of the strongest complete rock albums of the past several years was sitting there waiting for people to really absorb it. This is not background music. It’s not playlist filler.
It’s an album that deserves to be played front to back at full volume while actually paying attention. The emotional arc only fully lands when you stay with it from beginning to end. And maybe that’s part of why it didn’t dominate modern music culture the way it should have.
Listening properly requires time now. It requires attention. That has become strangely rare.
