Joe Ely
About
Joe Ely was an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist who emerged as one of the main movers of Austin, Texas's progressive country scene during the 1970s and 1980s. Embodying the restless spirit of his heroes Jack Kerouac and Woody Guthrie, Ely took to the road with a nomadic passion, eventually making his way through California and New York, where he worked as a janitor in a theatre while honing his craft. His distinctive blend of country sensibilities with progressive energy captured the hearts of audiences and fellow musicians alike, establishing him as a vital force in Texas music.
Ely's influence extended far beyond the Lone Star State, earning him recognition from international artists who recognized his significance. The Clash notably paid tribute to him by including the lyrics "Well, there ain't no better blend than Joe Ely and his Texas Men" in their 1980 song "If Music Could Talk" from the album Sandinista!, and Ely contributed backing vocals to the Clash's iconic single "Should I Stay or Should I Go." Over his prolific career, Ely released 16 studio albums alongside numerous live recordings and compilations, leaving an indelible mark on American music that bridged country tradition with artistic innovation.
