Natalie Merchant is an American singer-songwriter whose artistic journey began when she joined the influential band 10,000 Maniacs in 1981. As the group's lead vocalist and primary lyricist, she helped shape the sound of alternative rock throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, remaining with the band through their first seven albums. Her breakthrough came with the band's MTV Unplugged performance, where a cover of "Because the Night" became their highest-charting song in the U.S., reaching No. 11 on the Hot 100 chart in 1994.
Born in Jamestown, New York, Merchant transitioned to a solo career in 1993, launching an impressive trajectory as an independent artist. She has since released nine studio albums, establishing herself as a distinctive voice in contemporary music.
