Last night, I along with members of Masters Radio were guests of Foreigner and Styx for their concert as part of the Renegades and Juke Box Heroes Tour. I’ve shared one of my personal pics and more will be coming from our staff photographer later today or tomorrow.
John Waite opened the show with classic hits from his career that included solo work and tunes from his time with The Babys. My main wish is that when I get to his age, I hope that I have that much energy besides having a fantastic voice like his. Although the crowd enjoyed and sang along with familiar tunes, the final song tribute to Led Zep’s “Whole Lotta Love” brought everyone to their feet. Robert Plant only wishes his voice could still hit the notes John did. Great performance.
Next up on the stage was Foreigner. A trip down memory lane best described this set and found a whole audience singing along with lead singer Kelly Hansen. While the stage lighting was mesmerizing, it was great to hear a band rely on their MUSIC as the highlight of the performance instead of a large stage production. I also told another MR attendee that I don’t think I’ve heard a band so tight. They delivered on the reason they are members of the R&RHOF. Shout out to MR friends and band members Michael Bluestein, Jeff Pilson, and Chris Frazier.
Styx was the closing act last night and what a way to end one of the best concerts I’ve seen, or heard, in years. We were sad that MR friend Chuck Panozzo wasn’t able to play and remains off the tour for a few weeks. Feel better Chuck. While he was missed, Terry Gowan was everything a rockstar should be: energetic, fun to watch, and amazing on the bass. Somebody also needs to check his brother’s ID because Lawrence Gowan, two time interviewee of MR, seems like he is immortal. What a performer, even without the gold jacket. Shout out to Todd Sucherman, who we need to interview regarding his drumming style, Will Evankovich, and of course Tommy Shaw and James Young (nice hat). Thanks also guys for playing “Crash of the Crown.” That song is the reason we exist.
Final grade for the entire night? A+
One more tip in. As I write this, Chuck P. just texted me saying “I perform with the BEST singers, songwriters, musicians, and showmen for the past 50 years.” Yes Chuck, we agree.
