Bohemian Rhapsody only became a hit because radio DJs ignored the rules and played the whole damn thing anyway. At six minutes long with no chorus safety net this song was considered commercial suicide. Labels wanted an edit. Programmers wanted something shorter. DJs heard it once and said nope we are not cutting this up.
So they broke format and spun it in full rotation. Listeners went insane phones lit up and suddenly radio had no choice but to follow the audience instead of the spreadsheet. It is a perfect reminder that some of the most iconic moments in music history exist because someone trusted their ears more than the system.
