The Hit Song That Nearly Wrecked The Band Financially

Tusk was a hit but it almost sank Fleetwood Mac in the process. Coming off the massive success of Rumours the band could have printed money by playing it safe. Instead Lindsey Buckingham convinced them to chase something stranger louder and wildly more expensive including hiring the USC marching band and recording across multiple studios with no interest in efficiency.

The album went platinum and the title track became iconic but the production costs were so high it took years to recover financially. Tusk is proof that commercial success and financial sanity are not always friends. Sometimes the most important artistic statements come with a price tag that makes accountants sweat and artists smile anyway.
