Foo Fighters is an American rock band, formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1994. It was founded by Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl as a one-man project following the dissolution of Nirvana after the suicide of Kurt Cobain.

The band has had a steady release of albums since their debut, each with successful singles. On their debut album (1995), their single, “I’ll Stick Around” hit No. 8 on the US Hot Modern Rock charts. 1997’s The Colour and the Shape consisted of two big hits, with “Monkey Wrench” and “Everlong.”

The group got its name from the UFOs and various aerial phenomena that were reported by Allied aircraft pilots in World War II, which were known collectively as “foo fighters”. Grohl hoped to keep his anonymity and release the recordings in a limited run under the title “Foo Fighters”. Says Grohl, “Around the time that I recorded the first FF tape, I was reading a lot of books on UFO’s. Not only is it a fascinating subject, but there’s a treasure trove of band names in those UFO books!”  “So, since I had recorded the first record by myself, playing all the instruments, but I wanted people to think that it was a group, I figured that FOO FIGHTERS might lead people to believe that it was more than just one guy.
